Hello my name is Stephen Harris. I am a painter that paints self-portraits of other people and their culture. The work I make comments on the unspoken communication between people their environment and their history.

going inside of a moving painting

I will challenge the history of painting through a digital format.

I will be creating a moving painting inside a traditional framed canvas.
One of my paintings, whites only for example will transform itself into an animated world that the viewer will be able go inside. The viewer will fly through the piece to explore the painted world moving past the many layers of paint to move further inside 3-d space. In between the layers the viewer will encounter animated text that will fly by. The text is the thought process of the artist that he used when he created the piece. Scenes of the artist working will fade in out of view. They are the labor that went into the work. Afterwards the onlookers will pause in the middle of the painting to take in a scene of serene landscape created out of paint. The landscape is the artist emotions and feelings about the painting. Then the viewer will pass through the 3-d space back into a 2-d space seeing the piece as a whole again. The animation will loop back onto itself continuously. Painting animation will be viewed by the audience by being projected onto a canvas.

The purpose of the piece is to challenge traditional ideas of how a viewer views and interact with a painting.

write up

So far I have a DVD painting menu. I have three logo to choice from. I also I have a large count portfolio photographed. I have to retake two photos. I need to shuffle through which pieces I will put on the dvd. I have a well made side show of close to sixty today. I do not have my footage with me today in class. I been saving it on my computer. I have large amount of space so I could keep the files their easier. I'll be through with my first painting video by tomorrow so it will be finished and edit by the end of the weekend. I need to figure out how to use sound. I'm asking around now. I know some people with experience with sound. I'm pretty sure I would need it for my logos.

Over the weekend I have been working on the animation intro of the paint ball fight. I have made a paint orb, I have collected enough images to build all my assets. Now I have just started. As well as categorizing my portfolio for my DVD. I ran into a small snag and I will have to rephotograph half of my new paintings. Since the exploding orb animation is out I have started on a new idea. A small stop motion paint video with a mask of my name. The main paint video is slowly coming but I am making progress.

Hello Jill,

After Friday, I have been thinking about my critic of my plans for this semester for the aftereffects class Thursday. And I going to change it. But not by much. I going to still create the interview documentary about my myself and my work. But I going to remove the mockery from it. It will not be half ass joke. It will be serious. I will take myself serious my work serious and the interview serious. I will use this video and DVD as an actual advertisement for myself to advertise my abilities in after effects, painting, and portraiture.
The interview video will go on my website that I have designed. My goals have changed slightly and I will show you my full schedule Tuesday. But here is the over all list: DVD movie menu, animated sequences, animated intro, animated short, documentary interview, painting video of my BFA, and animated credits at the end.

Also I finally paid my deposit for this class so I will I like to check out a camera as soon as possible to get started. I'll continue to add more sample videos to my blog over the weekend.

why.

These three videos are small demos I created to refresh myself on some of the effects of after effect. In each video I used different effects-- track matts, masks, 3d, camera, expressions, time remaps, and different strategies to create these projects. They also relate to final project: a DVD movie and branding advertisement of myself as an artist. All three of the videos are dummy versions of elements you would find in a DVD. The first and second video are ideas I thought about for an intro logo video using paint and ink splatters. The last was example of a movie menu for a dvd. It is based off my painting video I made of one of paintings, whites only.

exploratory

To solve my problem of deciding which effects I would like to use. I will make a quick animation with a little character, a bouncing pea with a cap. It should be finished by Tuesday. I found a good example of a simple animation in after effects. It's not long, variety of tools and it has sequences. It will be a sketch for my intro animation.

video copilot has a good dvd menu tutorial for after effects.
this other guy has a good one as well.
I going to make a dummy menu and dummy dvd file.
I should have it completed by the weekend. i'll look for more.

This is it

My goal for this semester is to make an high quality DVD to advertise my abilities with after effects as well as my abilities in painting.
In this DVD there will be a motion graphic movie in the background of the menu instead of a common Photoshop still. There will be animated sequences in between the transitions of the menu and sub-menus. There will be a slide show of my paintings. I will have three painting movies: one will be of my mural piece, the second will be of my Delta show piece, and third will be of my BFA piece. I will also have a movie documenting my BFA as well. The documentation film will show the steps creating the piece, the materials and the process of the BFA. There will be commentary and a small interview of myself talking about my work in the documentation film.
I want the film to have a build up like a legitimate theater production and also have a satirical joking feel. Therefore I will create a false studio logo intro and a false rating in the beginning, and a rolling credits at the end. During my own commentary and a section of the film where I talk to other painters in the painting department about their work I will have animated characters talk over during the movie and make rude remarks. I got the idea from mystery science theater 3000.
I not sure which effects I will use, but I will use the first two weeks to learn the ones I never learned in the first class: the 3D elements.

I'm interested in advertisement in art. I have been looking at artist like INSA, David Choe, Aurel Schmidt and believe or not thomas kinkade. all these artist advertise themselves well in the public eye with a certain persona in the art world.
